Balian from Ibelin
Balian of Ibelin , also Balian of Nablus (* early 1140s ; † 1193 ) was lord of Ibelin and Nablus , later lord of Caymont . He was a leading baron in the Kingdom of Jerusalem .
Balian was a son of Barisan of Ibelin and the brother of Hugo and Baldwin of Ibelin . His real name was Barisan, but the pronunciation of the name changed to "Balian" during the 12th century . He is therefore sometimes also called " Balian the Younger " when his father is referred to as "Balian the Elder".
Life
After Hugo's death in 1170, he received Ibelin Castle from his heir, his older brother Baldwin, who himself only kept the rulership of Ramla for himself. 1174 supported Balian and Balduin Raymond III. of Tripoli against Miles von Plancy as regent for King Baldwin IV , in 1177 the brothers took part in the battle of Montgisard . In the same year he married Maria Komnena , the widow of King Amalrich I , who brought the rule of Nablus into the marriage as an appanage .
Balian and his brother supported Raimund against Guido von Lusignan , Sibylle's husband , in 1183 on the question of reign for the leper king of Jerusalem. Balian was present at the coronation of Baldwin V in 1183 , which took place during Baldwin IV's lifetime, in order to prevent Guido as his successor. Baldwin IV died in 1185, Baldwin V the following year, and when Raymond's favorite to succeed him, Humfried IV of Toron , rejected the crown and took Guido's side, Balian reluctantly took the oath of allegiance to Guido while his brother went into exile went to Antioch .
Balian escaped the Battle of Hattin in 1187 and helped defend Jerusalem and negotiate its submission to Saladin in October. Saladin conquered Ibelin, Nablus, Ramla and all the rest of Balian's property, and Balian and his family were allowed to flee to Tripoli . He initially supported Guido in his fight for the title of king against Konrad von Montferrat , but then allied himself with Maria Komnena in order to marry Konrad to Isabella I , Maria's daughter from her marriage to Amalrich I, which gave Konrad a stronger claim to the kingdom received. After Konrad's death and Isabella's remarriage to Henry II of Champagne , Balian remained one of Heinrich's advisors. In 1192 he helped with the negotiations between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, which concluded the Third Crusade . With Ibelin remaining under Saladin's control, Richard Balian gave Caymont the new rule .
