Hervormde kerk with a free-standing bell tower in Ballum
Rijksmonument Gerrit Kosterweg 10, Ballum

Ballum is a village on the West Frisian island of Ameland in the Netherlands . With 425 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) it is the smallest village, but traditionally the main town of the island community, as the seat of the respective island rulers was located here from around 1400 onwards. Part of the village is under beschermd dorpsgezicht , a kind of monument protection. Some Ballum buildings and handicrafts are registered in the state rijksmonumentenregister , including the village tower and the Renaissance pulpit inside the Hervormde Kerk. Compared to the neighboring communities of Nes and Hollum , Ballum is less influenced by tourism.

Attractions

The village tower is the successor to a wooden belfry that was demolished in 1755. The tower was important as a navigation mark for shipping, the chimes of the bells indicated the time and the villagers were warned of impending danger. At this point there used to be the stake and the scourge column, which were used to punish convicted criminals. The bell, which is now in the village tower, was only installed after the Second World War, as the original bell from 1784 had been confiscated by the German occupiers.

The church behind the tower was built in 1832. The pulpit inside the church was originally made for the Grote Kerk in Harlingen , but was later sold to the Cammingha family and placed in their castle chapel.

Court was held in the castle, built around 1425 by the first lord of the island, Ritske Jelmera, and the sentences imposed were carried out on the square in front of the bell tower. In 1829 the manor was demolished; today the town hall of the island stands in its place. Nothing is left of the old castle. Only a grave slab that closes the Camminghas crypt remains from the time of the last ruling Ameland family. It is located in the morgue of the cemetery next to the town hall.

Surroundings

To the west of Ballum is Ameland Airport Ballum , Ameland's airfield opened in 1957. The Galgenslotpad runs between Ballum and the neighboring village of Hollum , a hiking trail through a forest that was once the site of Ameland's execution site.

Ballumerbocht

Ferry connections to the mainland, which were run by local family businesses with sailing boats, started for a long time from Ballumerbocht to the east , until a regular, motorized ferry service from the new pier in Nes to Holwerd was established at the beginning of the 20th century . The new competition and changed flow conditions in the Wadden Sea off the island contributed to the fact that the Ballum connection was discontinued soon afterwards. Today the rescue station of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij and the museum harbor Zeemanshoop , in which old KNRM lifeboats are located, are located in Ballumerbocht .
