Baltasar Lobo
Baltasar Lobo (born February 22, 1910 in Cerecinos de Campos , Zamora province , † September 4, 1993 in Paris ) was a Spanish sculptor and draftsman . He is known for his compositions on the subject of "Mother and Child".
life and work
At the age of 12, Lobo started his apprenticeship with the sculptor Ramon Nuñez. In 1927 he won a scholarship from the School of Fine Arts, Madrid, and went to Madrid, where he learned about the work of Miró, Picasso and Gargallo. Lobo was actively involved in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) for the republic and against fascism, which was also reflected in his work. In 1939 he had to leave Spain and moved to Paris with his wife Mercedes Comaposada . In Paris he was friends with Pablo Picasso . For several years he worked as an assistant in Henri Laurens' studio . His work is influenced by Laurens, but also by Constantin Brâncuși and Jean Arp . His work was shown early in France, for example in 1945 in the Vendôme Gallery (Rue de la Paix), alongside works by Henri Matisse , Fernand Léger , Maurice Utrillo and Pablo Picasso. In 1946 his works were exhibited in the Drouin Gallery. Galleries and museums worldwide u. a. Lobos' works were shown in Prague, Darmstadt, Brussels, Luxembourg, Zurich, Caracas and Tokyo.
Lobo was buried in 1993 in Montparnasse Cemetery , Paris.
In 2009 the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Baltasar Lobo opened in the city of Zamora , near the artist's birthplace ; it shows 69 works by the artist, donated by the artist and his family.
