The focus of the magazine is the Liechtenstein community of Balzers . In around 60 - 80 pages, the magazine reports on the history, culture, economy, nature and society of the place. The magazine "Balzner Neujahrsblätter" appeared for the first time at the beginning of 1995. The magazine is financed by sponsors, the public sector and subscribers. The municipality of Balzers purchases a large number of copies at a price that covers costs and gives them away to households. The circulation was around 2500 copies in 2011, is increasing and extends beyond the municipal boundaries and also beyond the state border of Liechtenstein.

history

The “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” magazine was initiated by Hans Brunhart . Hans Brunhart had studied German and was head of the Liechtenstein State Library and the State Archives in the early 1970s . As a politician, he served from 1974 to 1993, first as deputy head of government, then as head of government . The “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” magazine was founded by a group of men who, in addition to the initiator Hans Brunhart, also included Georg Burgmeier, Elmar Bürzle and Anton Gstöhl, who also form the editorial team that has remained stable over the years. Immediately after the first publication, a woman joined the team in 1995:

"Fortunately, we were able to win a new member in Ms. Rita Vogt who is committed to our cause."

- The editorial team

The magazine “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” appeared for the first time at the beginning of 1995. Since then it has been published in Balzers at the turn of the year . The idea for a New Year's paper came from Switzerland, where a New Year's paper with articles about local conditions appears in numerous cities and communities. The “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” are based on this Swiss tradition.

The two daily newspapers in Liechtenstein reported positives on the first edition of the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter”: The Liechtensteiner Volksblatt wrote that the first edition was a promising start, and the Liechtensteiner Vaterland called the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” a “diverse annual publication”.

The magazine is financed by the public sector, sponsors and subscribers. The municipality of Balzers is one of the most important part of the supporting public sector. It purchases a large number of copies and distributes them to households at the beginning of the year as a gift from the municipality. With its decision to purchase 1,800 copies at a cost-covering price, the municipality of Balzers has created the decisive prerequisite for enabling this publication to be published.

"Thanks to the great support from the municipality of Balzers, the Liechtensteinische Landesbank and the State of Liechtenstein, it is also financially secure."

- The editorial team

The reactions of the readers are positive, and the "Balzner Neujahrsblätter" meet a need: On the one hand, because the research into Balzner village history is presented in a variety of ways, and on the other hand because the Balzners care about preserving and promoting cultural values especially in this day and age when the world is growing closer and closer together. The number of subscribers is increasing, and the magazine is also attracting interest beyond the municipal boundaries. Even Liechtenstein residents living abroad subscribe to the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter”. In 2011 the circulation was around 2500 copies.

authors

The topics on which the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” report are largely selected by the editorial team. But the readership also comes up with ideas and suggestions that are taken up by the editorial team. After the selection of topics has been made, the editors ask personalities of Liechtenstein historical research to write articles. For experts in the field of historical research, a magazine such as the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” offers a platform for publishing research results on a smaller scale. For the first edition in 1995, the editorial team had already recruited a number of competent experts and over time they were able to gain new ones. The experts research a wide variety of topics related to the municipality of Balzers and then publish the articles they have written exclusively for the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter”. With their contributions, the authors stretch the framework beyond the community and connect Balzers with the neighborhood so that the community does not appear in isolation, but in a context.

All authors research and work on a voluntary basis and without remuneration.

Content and concept

The topic of the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” is the municipality of Balzers. Although this is the focus, it is embedded in a historical, demographic and cultural context, which is why the topics also extend beyond the municipal boundaries. The editorial team works closely with cultural institutions and associations. Balzers is viewed from different perspectives: from the outside, for example from the perspective of a Ukrainian emigrant who immigrated to Balzers in 1956. Articles are also written with an outward view from Balzers, as was the case with the regulation of the state border with Graubünden , but also what comes into focus for Balzner in Balzers itself, such as the Balzner taverns, which appear in the mirror of traffic history .

Balzers exists and develops in the context of time, which is why the village is viewed from different times and examined from a perspective of the past, the present and the future. In the first edition, for example, the article “A Village in Transition” provides detailed and multi-layered information about the change in the courtship world over the years.

With around 60 - 80 pages per issue, the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” report on the history, culture, nature, economy and society of Balzers from different perspectives at the turn of the year. Each issue also contains articles on the topic of dialect , as well as regular rubrics to which the “Balzner Chronik”, “100 Years Ago” and “Our Deceased” belong.

Millennium Edition

For the Millennium Edition, the editors asked a cross-section of Balzers residents to write articles under the motto “What I think about Balzers”. Around 60 articles were published in the “Balzner Neujahrsbl Blätter 2000”, which were written by the residents themselves. The authors included women, men, young and old people, Balzner people as well as people who immigrated to the Balzers community from Liechtenstein and abroad. The editors wanted to know from the residents what they think of Balzers, what their personal views, impressions and wishes would be with regard to the community. With around 60 articles on the topic, the Millennium Edition differed from the other “Balzner Neujahrsblätter”, where the content revolves around history, lifestyle, neighborhood, nature and literature.

cover photo

In the introduction to the 2006 edition, the editorial team announced a competition and invited readers to contribute to the publications of the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter” with pictures. The editorial team specified three themes for the competition: "St. Peter's Chapel", " Murderer's Castle " and " St. Luzisteig Arms ". The readership was invited to submit black and white photographs on the given topics to the editorial office. These pictures were presented at the presentation of the “New Year's Leaflets 2007” as part of a small exhibition. Marion Leal's winning photo was printed on the cover of the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter 2007”. The other ranked photos appeared as illustrations in the magazine. Since then, the editorial team has organized an annual competition for the cover of the “Balzner Neujahrsblätter”.
