Ban Don Ta Phet ( Thai ดอน ตา เพชร ) is a village in the Amphoe (district) Phanom Thuan , Province of Kanchanaburi in Thailand . Here is an archaeological excavation site with a cemetery from the 7th century BC. Chr.

Excavation history

In September 1975 school children found strange pottery shards and rings in the village when construction workers were building the foundation for a fence. This drew the local authorities' attention, and the Fine Arts Department started digging under the direction of Chin You-di, which uncovered many graves. The site was re- examined in 1980 under the direction of Ian Glover and Pisit Charoenwongsa. The finds indicate an early contact between India and the peoples in Southeast Asia , whereby the proximity to the Three Pagoda Pass facilitates the movement of people and goods in a west-east direction. Radiocarbon studies have shown that between around 670 BC BC and 100 BC BC settled.

Finds

Objects from other cultures were used for the funeral rites. B. Carnelian and agate , glass and bronze beads , all of which could have come from India. The grave field itself was diked. The bronze containers depict scenes of women and animals, and the material has a high tin content . Some features point to Indian origin of these containers. A carnelian lion also indicates the spread of Buddhism in this area, because at that time the Buddha was often depicted as a lion.

Many iron spears that were used as grave goods reveal technological knowledge. A two-headed animal ornament made of jade points to Vietnam , the center for the production of such unusual formats at the time.
