Amphoe Phanom Thuan ( Thai : อำเภอ พนมทวน ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) in the eastern part of Kanchanaburi Province . Kanchanaburi Province is located in the west of the central region of Thailand on the border with Myanmar .

Neighboring districts are (from south clockwise): Amphoe Tha Maka , Tha Muang , Bo Phloi and Huai Krachao Kanchanaburi province and Amphoe U Thong and Song Phi Nong of Suphan Buri Province .

history

The area around Phanom Thuan was already settled in prehistoric times. Many items from a 4th century BC cemetery were found at the Ban Don Ta Phet archaeological site . BC , which indicate a trade connection to India, Vietnam and the Philippines.

At the Don Chedi Archaeological Site in 1982, an excavation team from the Fine Arts Department found many human skeletons as well as elephant bones and swords. It is therefore believed that the famous battle between the Burmese crown prince and King Naresuan took place here, which, according to classical historiography, was ascribed to the Don Chedi district. Phanom Thuan County was one of the first three districts in Kanchanaburi Province. It was initially called "Nuea" ( north ), as it consisted of the entire northern part of the province. When King Nang Klao ( Rama III ) moved the center of Kanchanaburi and changed its size in 1831, the Nuea District was renamed Ban Thuan. It now consisted of the mountain landscapes and the river flowing north. In 1939 the name was changed to Phanom Thuan.

There are five municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

• Don Chedi (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ดอนเจดีย์ ) consisting of the complete tambon Don Chedi.
• Phanom Thuan (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล พนมทวน ) consisting of parts of the tambon Phanom Thuan.
• Talat Khet (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ตลาด เขต ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Rang Wai.
• Nong Sarai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง สาหร่าย ) consisting of the complete Tambon Nong Sarai.
• Rang Wai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ราง หวาย ) consisting of parts of the tambon Rang Wai.

There are also five " tambon administration organizations " ({lang | th | องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล} - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO)

• Phanom Thuan (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล พนมทวน ) consisting of parts of the tambon Phanom Thuan.
• Nong Rong (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล หนอง โรง ) consisting of the complete Tambon Nong Rong.
• Thung Samo (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ทุ่ง สมอ ) consisting of the complete tambon Thung Samo.
• Phang Tru (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล พัง ตรุ ) consisting of the complete Tambon Phang Tru.
• Don Ta Phet (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ดอน ตา เพชร ) consisting of the complete tambon Don Ta Phet.
