Banarsi Das Gupta

Banarsi Das Gupta (born November 5, 1917 in Manheru , Bhiwani ; † August 29, 2007 in New Delhi , Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress . From 1975 to 1977 and 1990 he was Chief Minister of Haryana State .

After his school education in Pilani in Rajasthan he was socially and politically engaged in the state of Jind (today in Haryana) and was imprisoned several times. He sat down especially for the agricultural and caste nlosen Harijans , but also against discriminatory social traditions. In rural areas in particular, he pushed for education, the abolition of the dowry system and child marriage, as well as the right to remarriage for widows.

Gupta was the main patron of several educational institutions in Haryana. He was elected to the Haryana State Parliament three times and served once as its spokesman. For several years he was Minister, Vice Chief Minister and twice Chief Minister of Haryana. In 1996 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha .

For a long time he was the editor of the Hindi weekly newspapers Apna Desh and Haryana Kesri .

Banarsi Das Gupta was married and had a son and two daughters.
