Pilani ( Hindi : पिलानी) is a city with around 40,000 inhabitants in the Indian state of Rajasthan . Its name is derived from a fighter from a local Gotra who once died defending the place.

location

Pilani is located in the northeast of the Jhunjhunu district near the border with the state of Haryana at an altitude of about 295 m above sea level. d. M. The distance to Jaipur is approx. 200 km (driving distance) in a southerly direction; the Indian capital Delhi is also about 200 km to the east. The climate is mostly dry and hot; the low precipitation of less than 400 mm / year falls almost exclusively in the summer monsoon months .

population

Official population statistics have only been kept and published since 1991. The strong increase in the urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from the surrounding area.

Residents 21,430 26,224 29,741

About 92% of the population are Hindus and a good 7.5% are Muslims ; other religious groups such as Jains , Sikhs , Christians and Buddhists are numerically insignificant fringe groups. Mostly Hindi and Rajasthani are spoken . As is customary in northern India, the male share of the population is almost 10% higher than the female; the literacy rate is 85.7%, making it one of the highest in India.

economy

Originally the people lived from the low yields of their fields, on which millet and sometimes wheat were grown, as well as from some livestock (sheep, goats, camels), with the production of milk and wool in the foreground. In the 20th century, the city developed into an important regional and supraregional educational center - this is where the important Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), which was elevated to the rank of university in 1964, and other educational institutions are located.

history

For centuries, Pilani was nothing more than a larger village on the edge of the Shekhawati region, but the routes of the trade caravans led past the town to the south. The development of the city only began in the 20th century.

Attractions

The city has no sights from earlier times - but what is important is the Sarasvati Temple (also Birla Temple ), which was built between 1956 and 1960 in traditional styles on the BITS site in the west of the city . Its outer walls also contain figures of philosophers and Scientists show. A science museum is also of interest.
