Banatski Despotovac ( Cyrillic Банатски Деспотовац, Hungarian Ernőháza , German Ernsthausen ) is a place in the Serbian Banat , about 20 km east of Zrenjanin , 98 km north of Belgrade . It has around one and a half thousand inhabitants.

history

It was founded in 1822 as a Danube Swabian settlement. The 1930 census showed a population of 2,421 people.

The establishment of the village began with the "settlement contract" of September 15, 1821. At the time of the establishment of the village, the landowner was Field Marshal Lieutenant Ernest Kiss de Elemer and Itebe. The settlers were exclusively Roman Catholic and German-speaking. In 1844 the settlers built a large schoolhouse that was used until 1944. Ernest Kiss was shot dead in Arad on October 16, 1849 . After the first transfer fee had been paid in 1860, the land became the property of the settlers in accordance with the contract. On December 8th, 1888, the Gothic style church was consecrated. It was in 1945 - after the expulsion of the Danube Swabians result of the AVNOJ decisions - demolished. According to the 1991 census, there were 1,823 inhabitants in Banatski Despotovac.
