The BNU building in Dili (2009)

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) building in Dili, the capital of East Timor, is located on the corner of Rua 25 de Abril, (to the north, before November 2015 Rua Nicolau dos Reis Lobato ) and Rua de Moçambique (to the west, formerly Rua Dom Fernando ) in Suco Colmera ( Vera Cruz Administration Office ). The Banco Nacional Ultra Marino is a subsidiary of Portuguese bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos .

Background and story

The BNU has had a branch in Dili since 1912 . In addition to its function as a bank, it also issued the currency of the Portuguese Timor colony , the pataca , and later the escudo . Until it was destroyed by the Japanese in World War II , the bank was located in the main office building. Then the BNU rented a building in the Archdiocese of Dili . The new BNU building was constructed between 1966 and 1968. The architect was Fernando Schiappa de Campos . After the Indonesian invasion in 1975, the regional Daerah Bank took over the business of the BNU. This was founded on the initiative of Francisco Lopes da Cruz , Vice-Governor of Timor Timur . Daerah Bank also took over the premises from the BNU. When the BNU resumed its business after the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 , it was initially housed in the building of the Associação Comercial, Agrícola e Industrial de Timor (ACAIT), as the BNU building had been destroyed by marauding pro-Indonesian militias . The reconstruction took place between 2000 and 2001. Then the BNU returned to its old building.

architecture

Like the ACAIT house, the building is a representative of modern architecture in Dili. The two buildings are a departure from the colonial, neoclassical style that has prevailed so far for representative buildings such as the government palace from the 1950s . However, unlike the ACAIT, the BNU is located outside the administrative district on a shopping street.

The building has a flat terrace roof and stands on stilts so that the ground floor floats above the ground. The front facade consists of a concrete grid that protects the windows from direct sunlight. The east-west orientation is also used for cooling. Cooling winds blow from the lake in the north, the sun shines mainly on the narrow fronts. The eye-catching canopy also protects.
