The Banff Primary School is the elementary school of the Scottish town of Banff in the Council area Aberdeenshire . Its main building was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A in 1972 .

history

In 1544 a secondary school was established in Banff. The Banff Academy emerged from this in 1786 . James Wilson from Banff, who was successful in Grenada , donated a new building to the Banff Academy, which was completed in 1837. The Scottish architect William Robertson is responsible for the design . Banff Primary School has been using this building since the Banff Academy moved. In 2002 the school received a new building at the rear of the historic building.

School operation

The catchment area of ​​the primary school extends over Banff and the villages to the south. Around 350 pupils and 70 preschoolers attend the school, which is looked after by around 30 teachers (as of 2019). French is compulsory as a foreign language . Gaelic lessons can be offered upon request.

Banff Primary School was the first school in Aberdeenshire to be built and operated in public-private sector cooperation . The contractor is Robertson PLC .

The approximately 47 m long classicist main facade faces southeast. It runs along Institution Terrace . A five-axis ionic portico emerges from the 15-axis facade in the center. The two corner projections are decorated with composite pilasters . The natural stone masonry made of sandstone is visible along the main facade , while the back of the building is plastered with Harl . The building closes with a gently sloping, slate-covered hip roof .
