The GDR became European champion with Gesine Walther , Bärbel Wöckel , Sabine Rieger and Marlies Göhr . Second place went to Great Britain with Wendy Hoyte , Kathy Smallwood , Beverley Callender and Shirley Thomas . Bronze went to France ( Laurence Bily , Marie-Christine Cazier , Rose-Aimée Bacoul , Liliane Gaschet ).

Record improvement
The European championship relay from the GDR improved the existing EM record in the line-up of Gesine Walther , Bärbel Wöckel , Sabine Rieger and Marlies Göhr in the final on September 11th by 32 hundredths of a second to 42.19 seconds.
