The banking house JA Krebs was a German private bank in Freiburg im Breisgau .

history

The Krebs family originally came from Breisach . In 1720 Franz Joseph Krebs (1696–1752) moved to Freiburg, where in 1721, by marrying Maria Anna Martin, he became the owner of the company of the French merchant Martin, who had lived in Freiburg since 1683. This trading house, which also ran financial transactions, was continued by his son Joseph Alexander Krebs (1728–1797), then by his son Joseph Alexander Krebs II (1767–1834). Successors were his sons Joseph Alexander Krebs III. (1802–1861) and Johann Krebs (1813–1895). This was followed in 1868 by Adolf Krebs I (1841–1874), who separated the trading company and bank when he took over the company, and after his early death Eugen Krebs (1848–1912). He was succeeded by his sons Adolf Krebs II (1876-1960) and Eugen Krebs II (1877-1943). The last family owners were Adolf Krebs III. (1905–) and Heinz Krebs (1906–2003). In 1913, Rheinische Creditbank , a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank from 1929 , acquired a stake, but this was dissolved again in 1936. In 1980 the Krebs family withdrew from the management after seven generations, which was taken over by Walter Krämer (* 1935).

The banking house JA Krebs was closed on July 12, 1995 due to defaults due to risky credit transactions by the Federal Banking Supervisory Office . As a result, the bank filed a settlement application in August 1995 to avert the impending bankruptcy proceedings . The bank was the fourth largest claim to date for the deposit protection fund of the Federal Association of German Banks , with compensation of around DM 200 million .

building

The headquarters of the bank had been in a house (“Haus zum Kempfen”) at Freiburg Münsterplatz 4 since 1905 , which had been owned by the family and the headquarters of the Krebs trading company since 1739. The architects Max Meckel and his son Carl Anton Meckel rebuilt the building in 1904/05. On November 27, 1944, the building burned down during an air raid on Freiburg , but was completely rebuilt from 1948 to 1952.
