The jack-up platform Barbara was a test platform for the Bundeswehr . It was assigned to the Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle 71 (WTD 71) in Eckernförde and was used to test weapons and weapons control systems. It was named after St. Barbara , the patron saint of artillery .

The jack-up platform was built by Howaldtswerke in Kiel and handed over to the German armed forces in June 1964. She received a civilian crew with 11 members. The home port was the branch office of WTD 71 in Surendorf on Eckernförde Bay .

Technical specifications

The platform did not have its own drive and was equipped with eight support piles. The weapons and fire control devices to be tested could be mounted on a central platform.

The power supply was provided by two diesel generators each of 950 hp / 750 kVA and 196 hp / 150 kVA. Two board cranes with a load capacity of 12 and 2.5 tons and two dinghies were available as aids.

In 1979 the support piles were lengthened and a helicopter platform was installed.

tasks

The Barbara was used to test weapons for the German Navy . To do this, it was towed to suitable test areas, from where the weapons could be tested with a live shot. One of the areas was the Meldorfer Bucht , where their operations met with criticism from nature conservationists.

Whereabouts

The jack-up platform Barbara on the wreck of the Pallas

The Bundeswehr put the jack-up platform out of service on December 15, 1995. It was then sold to the Dutch company Heuvelman via VEBEG . From November 19, 1998 to January 10, 1999, the Barbara came from Rotterdam for salvage work on the wreck of the burned-out freighter Pallas . All that is known about the further life of the jack-up platform is that it is still (as of August 2018) registered with an IMO number as Barbara under the flag of Curaçao .
