Barbara Slowik (2018)

Barbara Slowik (born March 14, 1966 in Berlin ) is a German lawyer and has been the police chief in Berlin since April 10, 2018 .

Professional background

Slowik studied from 1985 to 1990 law at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Slowik has been working in the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior since 1994 and in 2002 moved to the Federal Ministry of the Interior , where in 2010 she became head of the department for fundamental and legal matters in the fight against terrorism . In addition, they took over the technical supervision over the personal security of the Federal Government and accompanied the work of the Joint Counter-Terrorism Center .

It made a name for itself above all through the organizational establishment of the Joint Extremism and Terrorism Defense Center . Since June 2015, Barbara Slowik has headed the IT control unit, whose responsibility extended to all subordinate authorities to the Federal Ministry of the Interior and was a ministerial advisor until she left the Federal Ministry of the Interior .

Police chief in Berlin

At the suggestion and sole decision of the Berlin Senator for the Interior, Andreas Geisel , Slowik was appointed the new police chief in Berlin on April 10, 2018. She is the official successor of Police President Klaus Kandt , who has been in office since 2013 , and who was dismissed without prior notice for the political reorientation of the Berlin Police.

Barbara Slowik took over from Michael Krömer , who was temporarily appointed director , who on the same day, also temporarily, switched to the vacant post of Vice President. Barbara Slowik is the first woman in the office of police chief and at the same time the first person in this office since the end of the Second World War who has not previously worked in the police force .

In August 2020 she received a complaint from the caretaker of an occupied house on Rigaer Straße for thwarting punishment in the office . The background to this is the instruction that even in the case of imminent danger , the police may not enter by force (e.g. by kicking the door) into left scene objects without the prior approval of a superior of the higher service. The higher service starts from grade A13 , which is the case at the earliest with a police council . It was criticized in the advertisement that until such permission was obtained by telephone, the offender e.g. B. had long since disappeared through the back exit. Slowik justified himself with the fact that the reservation of decision had been in place since 2011 and was issued by Interior Senator Ehrhart Körting at the time. You only re-enacted the directive in a weakened form. However, the instruction does not apply to other criminal milieus, such as right-wing extremist meeting places or mosques where Islamists frequent.
