Klaus Kandt

Klaus Kandt (born May 17, 1960 in Stuttgart as Klaus Gass ) is a former German police officer , multiple police chief and political officer . Since 2019 he has been State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and for Local Authority Brandenburg .

Professional background

Kandt graduated from high school in Stuttgart in 1979 and then from 1979 to 1982 completed the preparatory service for the senior career at the then Federal Border Police .

After qualifying, he became a member of the special unit GSG 9 and later switched to the special task force of the Berlin police, where he was team leader from 1986 to 1990.

In 1993 he changed again, after advancement training for the higher service , and took over the vacant position of the head of the special units at the police in Brandenburg . In mid-2002, as part of the police reform, Kandt became head of the management staff and police vice-president in Frankfurt (Oder) .

Chief of Police

On February 1, 2005, he became police chief in Frankfurt (Oder) . By resolution of the state government of Brandenburg , Kandt moved to Potsdam on July 17, 2007 as the successor to Bruno Küpper as police chief .

From 2008 to 2012 Kandt was President of the Federal Police Directorate in Berlin .

On December 17, 2012, Frank Henkel, Senator for the Interior, appointed him Police President in Berlin . In April 2015 he resigned from the police union because, in his view, the union showed no interest in clearing up or even investigating the right-wing populist past of GdP press spokesman Steve Feldmann .

On February 26, 2018, Senator for the Interior, Andreas Geisel, put him into early retirement with immediate effect. Geisel cited the reason that he no longer had the confidence that Kandt stood for renewal and spoke to the Berlin police about the Anis Amri case when asked about renewal .

Since August 2019 he has been the new advisor to the Federal Association of Traffic Safety Technology (BVST).

State Secretary

Since November 20, 2019, Kandt has been State Secretary for the Interior in the Ministry of the Interior and for Communal Brandenburg in the Woidke III cabinet .

Private

Kandt is married and has lived in Berlin with his wife and three children since 1986.
