history

1887 was in Aarau Cantonal Hospital (later Kantonsspital Aarau opened). However, she did not have a tuberculosis treatment department . At that time the prevailing view was that tuberculosis could only be combated in high-altitude sanatoriums in the Alps . In professional circles, however, the realization gradually gained acceptance that lower-lying locations, for example in the Jura , could also be considered.

The impetus for a high altitude clinic on Aargau soil was given in 1894 by the doctor Hans Siegrist , Grand Councilor and Mayor of Brugg and later National Councilor . A suitable location was quickly found on the Barmelweid above Erlinsbach. The basis for the financing was a collection campaign on the occasion of the Aargau centenary in 1903 and a tax increase for the expansion of the health care system decided the following year. In 1907 the Aargauische Heilstättenverein (since 2001: Verein Barmelweid) was founded as the supporting organization. Hans Siegrist was in charge of the fundraising, the choice of the location, the planning and the supervision of the construction work.

To (a donation of the building site Ortsbürgergemeinde to Erlinsbach) open up at all, had the Salhöhe forth a road to be built. Finally, on June 30, 1912, the clinic was opened after three years of construction. At the beginning it had 70 beds, but had to be expanded after a few years due to the great demand. In 1932 a children's clinic, also financed by donations, was added. In 1947 the Heilstättenverein had to ask the canton for more financial support because it was no longer able to cover the deficits with its own resources.

Between 1950 and 1956 the clinic was significantly expanded and the existing facilities were renovated. From the 1960s onwards, the number of people suffering from tuberculosis decreased steadily due to vaccinations, which is why the clinic increasingly turned to rehabilitation. At the end of the 1990s, the main building was significantly expanded again. The Hotel Geissflue has been part of the Barmelweid since 2006. In 2009, the sponsoring association took over the Laurenzenbad hospital around two kilometers to the east. The care business there was relocated to the Barmelweid in 2011, for this purpose the no longer needed children's clinic was converted. An additional extension is to be opened by the end of 2018.
