Barnaba Oriani (born July 17, 1752 in Carignano , † November 12, 1832 in Brera , Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto ) was an Italian astronomer .

After primary school in Carigniano, he studied with the support of the Barnabites in Milan at the San Alessandro University . After studying physics , mathematics , philosophy and theology , he became a priest in 1775 .

Due to his great interest in astronomy , he became an employee at the Brera Observatory in 1776 , where he became assistant in 1778 and finally director in 1802.

Oriani was a long-time friend of Giuseppe Piazzi , the discoverer of the dwarf planet Ceres . They worked together on many astronomical projects for 37 years. In 1802 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1804 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences , since 1808 of the Bavarian , since 1812 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and since 1823 Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
