The Barres ( French: Ruisseau des Barres ) is a river in France that runs mainly in the Grand Est region , but also briefly touches the Hauts-de-France region . It rises in the southern municipality of Fraillicourt , generally drains towards the south-southwest and flows into the Aisne as a right tributary after around 28 kilometers at the municipal boundary of Saint-Germainmont and Asfeld . Above Waleppe, the Barres seeps into the karst subsoil over a length of around 1.6 km . On its way, the river touches the Ardennes department and, for a short distance, the Aisne department .

Name of the river

The river changes its name several times in its course:

  • Ruisseau de Sévigny in the upper reaches,
  • Ruisseau de Nizy in the middle part and
  • Ruisseau des Barres in the lower reaches.
