Barry Coward

Barry Coward (born February 22, 1941 in Rochdale , Lancashire , † March 17, 2011 ) was a British historian . His research focus was on 17th century England .

Life

Coward grew up in Rochdale, where he attended the local grammar school . He later studied at the University of Sheffield , where he met his future wife and did his doctorate with Robin Jeffs . He was then in 1966 Lecturer at the History Department of Birkbeck College of the University of London . Coward spent his further academic career here and was most recently a professor . In 2006 he retired .

From 1999 to 2009 he was President of the Cromwell Association. He was also President of the Historical Association from 2005 to 2008 .

Coward had been married since 1967. The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter. He died of cancer in March 2011.
