Barry James Hickey (born April 16, 1936 in Leonora , Western Australia ) is retired Archbishop of Perth .

Life

Hickey was ordained a priest in Rome on December 20, 1958 by Paolo Cardinal Giobbe . After attending St Charles Seminary, he completed his degree in theology from 1955 to 1959 at the Pontifical Urban University ; In 1973 he earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Western Australia .

On March 22, 1984, he was appointed Bishop of Geraldton by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination from his predecessor in Geraldton and Archbishop of Perth, William Joseph Foley , on May 1 of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Old Archbishop of Perth, Lancelot John Goody , and the Old Bishop of Geraldton, Francis Xavier Thomas .

On July 23, 1991, he was appointed Archbishop of Perth . The inauguration took place on August 27 of the same year.

On February 20, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation put forward by Barry James Hickey for reasons of age.

He is Grand Prior of the Order of Western Australia of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Honors

In 1977 he was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM).
