Barry Ries

Barry Ries (born March 16, 1952 in Cincinnati / Ohio ) is an American jazz trumpeter and horn player.

Ries took drum lessons from his father as a child and began playing the trumpet at the age of eleven. He later appeared as a horn player with regional rock bands.

From 1970 Ries studied at the University of North Texas . Here he became a member of the One O'Clock Band and played a. a. with the bands of Ted Weems Jr. , Ray Anthony and Ralph Marterie . After graduating, he returned to Cincinnati and worked there as a drummer with pianist Ed Moss . In 1977 he went to Miami , where he performed with multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan .

The following year he came to New York with Woody Herman's band . After appearing with Paul Jeffrey , Duke Jordan , Joe Lovano , Ralph LaLama , Rich Perry , Jeff Hirshfield and Adam Nussbaum , he became a member of Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band . He also worked with Lionel Hampton and the Latin jazz musician Machito .

In 1985 Ries returned to Miami, where he worked with Colombian, Dominican and Cuban bands. In 1998 he made his debut as a band leader with the album Solitude in the Crowd with tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano , pianist Michael Cochrane and drummers Billy Drummond and Yoron Israel .
