Barry Stephenson

Barry Stephenson (* 1987 in Florida ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , composition ) of post bop .

Stephenson grew up in Florida and played electric bass in rock bands when he was 14 . He came into contact with jazz while in high school and began taking double bass lessons at the age of 17 in preparation for college. He then studied double bass with Rodney Jordan and Melanie Punter at Florida State University ; he also took private lessons from Marcus Roberts . Upon graduation, he moved to New Orleans to pursue a master's degree from the University of New Orleans ; He had lessons there with Roland Guerin . From 2011 he belonged to the Glen David Andrews Band and also took part in their recordings, such as Redemption . From 2013 he worked with Jon Batiste and Stay Human; he also appeared at international festivals in Montreux, Montreal, Newport, Monterey and Umbria.

Stephenson received the Louis Armstrong Award from the ASCAP Foundation in 2011 and the Svenson Composition Award in 2012 . In 2015 he presented his debut album Basic Truths with his own compositions. Recordings were made with Jamison Ross ( All for One , 2017). Ana Popović ( Trilogy ) and with Gregory Generet / Richard Johnson ( 2 of a Kind ) Currently (2019) he plays in the New York jazz club Smalls in the bands of Jonathan Thomas, Philip Dizack and Corey Wallace .
