Bartholomäus Helder was a son of the later superintendent and court preacher in Gotha Johannes Helder (1551-1621), who was rector of the Illustre grammar school in Gotha from 1582 to 1592 . Bartholomäus studied theology at the University of Leipzig from the age of 18 . From 1607 to 1616 he was a teacher and cantor in Friemar , then pastor in Remstädt until his death. He died of the plague during the Thirty Years War .

Helder published two choir books with polyphonic sacred chants. The first, Cymbalum Genethliacum (Erfurt 1615), contains 15 Christmas and New Year songs in the popular Villanelle style , the second, Cymbalum Davidicum (Erfurt 1620), 25 psalm songs in a more demanding motet- like setting . The Gotha Cantionale sacrum (1646–1648) offers 54 melodies with four- to six-part movements by Helder, including the one sung to this day I am happy in the Lord ( Evangelical Hymnal No. 349).
