Bartolomeo d'Avanzo (born July 3, 1811 in Avella , † October 20, 1884 ibid) was an Italian bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Bartolomeo d'Avanzo was born to Bartolomeo d'Avanzo, a doctor , and his wife, Caterina Buvelli. At a young age he entered the seminary of Nola , where he on 13 June 1829 received Confirmation was. After his ordination , he received on 20 September 1834 he moved to the University of Naples , at which he in on September 28, 1842 theology doctorate was and doctorates awarded.

As a priest , he initially worked as a professor of dogmatic theology and Hebrew at his alma mater , the Nola seminary. He also worked as a chaplain in the church of Nola. He later wrote articles for La Scienza e la Fede , a science magazine that appeared at irregular intervals, and made a name for himself as a book proofreader .

On March 18, 1851 d'Avanzo was appointed bishop of the diocese of Castellaneta ; The episcopal ordination donated to him on March 28, 1851 Cardinal Costantino Patrizi , Cardinal Bishop of Albano , co- consecrators were Antonio Ligi Bussi , Vice Dean of the Diocese of Rome , and Vincenzo Tizzani , former Bishop of Terni . Only two months after d'Avanzo began his new task, he survived a gunshot attack on August 13, 1860. An anti-clerical man fired four shots at Bishop d'Avanzo. The first hit the inside of the car in which d'Avanzo was driving, the second hit the right wrist and the third the left arm of the bishop. The fourth shot, which would probably have been the fatal one, penetrated the pectoral , the cross traditionally worn by bishops on the chest. The reason for the attack lay in the atmosphere in Italy, which was mostly hostile to the church at the time. D'Avanzo had always been strong against the Freemasons , which should have been one of the reasons.

Slightly injured, d'Avanzo gave up the diocese of Teano-Calvi and retired to the Capuchin monastery in Sorrento , where he lived in exile for seven years until 1867. Afterwards he was a participant in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870 , where he supported the dogma of the " infallibility of the Pope ".

Pope Pius IX elevated him to the rank of cardinal in the consistory of April 3, 1876 and transferred the titular church of Santa Susanna to the new cardinal priest on April 7, 1876 . As a cardinal, d'Avanzo was also a participant in the conclave of 1878 , in which Leo XIII. when Pope was elected.

After his death on October 20, 1884, Cardinal d'Avanzo was buried in the family grave in Avella.
