Costantino Patrizi Naro (born September 4, 1798 in Siena , † December 17, 1876 in Rome ) was an Italian Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . Benedetto Naro , also a cardinal, was his great-great-uncle.

Life

Costantino Patrizi Naro studied at the Collegio dei Protonotari in Rome, which he left as a doctor of both rights . He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1819 . He worked as a judge at the Roman Rota .

Leo XII. appointed him on December 15, 1828 titular Archbishop of Philippi . The auditor of the Roman Rota for Austria Carlo Odescalchi SJ donated him episcopal ordination on December 21 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei , Latin Patriarch of Antioch , and Paulus Augustus Foscolo , Archbishop of Corfu . Patrizi Naro represented the interests of the Holy See in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany as nuncio since January 16, 1829 . He stayed in Tuscany until his appointment as Prefect of the Apostolic Palace on July 2, 1832 by Pope Gregory XVI.

On June 23, 1834, the same Pope accepted him as Cardinal in pectore in the College of Cardinals . On July 11, 1836, his elevation was published in Capite by his appointment as cardinal priest of San Silvestro . From July 6, 1839 to December 22, 1841, he headed the Congregation for Bishops as prefect . In 1841 Patrizi became cardinal vicar of the Pope for the Diocese of Rome and held this office until his death in 1876. From 1845 to 1867 he was also archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore . He took part in the conclave of 1846 , which Pius IX. chose. The same raised him on April 20, 1849 cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . From 1854 to 1860 Patrizi Naro headed the Congregation for Rites as prefect . From October 10, 1860 until his death, he served as secretary of the Congregation of the Roman and General Inquisition . From 1867 to 1876 he was archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Saint John Lateran . With his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Ostia on October 8, 1870, he was appointed Cardinal Dean primus inter pares of the College of Cardinals.

Costantino Patrizi Naro was Honorary and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from 1860 to 1876 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta.

He died on December 17, 1876 at the age of 78 in Rome and was buried there in the Church of Natività (" Church of the Nativity ") in Via Nomentana . When the church was demolished in 1902 and replaced by the parish church of San Giuseppe a via Nomentana , his bones were transferred to the Lateran basilica. In the cathedral of Palermo an inscription commemorates Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro.
