Cathedral of St. James and Christopher in Corfu

The Archdiocese of Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia ( Latin Archidioecesis Corcyrensis, Zacynthiensis et Cephaloniensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Greece . The bishopric is in Corfu City . It includes the islands of Corfu , Kefalonia and Zakynthos and the southern Epirus .

history

The diocese was founded in 1310 by Charles of Anjou . The dioceses of Kefalonia and Zakinthos were once the suffragans of Corfu. The diocese of Kefalonia and Zakinthos were incorporated into the archdiocese with the Breve Cum ex Apostolico in 1919 , so that today Corfu has no suffragan seats . With the Breve Quae rei sacrae on March 10, 1926, the Greek-populated northern Epirus was acquired by the Archdiocese of Durazzo .

On the one hand, the Catholics on Corfu and the other Ionian Islands descend from the Venetians , who ruled here for centuries. On the other hand, there are descendants of Maltese workers who the English colonial power brought to Corfu in the first half of the 19th century. Today there are still some immigrants from various European countries.

The Cathedral of St. James and Christopher is located on the Platia Dimarchiou (Town Hall Square) in Corfu Town. It was built by the Venetians in the 17th century, partially destroyed by air raids in 1943, only rebuilt in the 1960s and consecrated again in 1970 .

The patron saint of the archdiocese is St. Spyridon .

There is one more Catholic church building each on Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, in Preveza and Ioannina .

The archbishopric today includes the Epirus region and the Ionian Islands region with Corfu, Lefkada , Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos.
