history
The Barwise settlement was founded in 1928 after the Fort Worth and Denver Railway Company built a railway line through the current location. The town was initially called Stringer , named after the farmer JW Stringer, who owned land near the settlement. Shortly after it was founded, however, the place was renamed Barwise. The new place name is derived from the name of the judge Joseph Hodson Barwise from Wichita Falls , who is considered the first hotel guest in Barwise. Barwise originally consisted of seven buildings. The railway line has since been dismantled.
In the 1930s, Barwise had a hotel, a village shop, a manure dealer, a gas station, an egrenier machine and two granaries. In 1940, Barwise had about 40 residents. In 1950 the settlement was given a paved road. In 1986 only the fertilizer dealer and a grain silo existed in Barwise, the rest was used as farmland. For 1990, Barwise had a population of 30 people, this number fell to 16 by 2000. Today Barwise consists of four residential buildings and a few farm buildings that are used for agriculture.
