Basílica Pontificia de San Miguel
The Basílica Pontificia de San Miguel , German Papal Basilica of St. Michael , is a Baroque Roman Catholic church in Madrid , since 1930 with the status of a minor basilica . It is opposite the Palace of the Archbishop of Madrid and is also the Church of the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain.
The church was built between 1739 and 1745 on the site of the former church of St. Justus and Pastor , which burned down in 1690. It has a width of 27 m and a length of 50 m. The church was built on behalf of the Archbishop of Toledo, Cardinal Luis de Borbón y Farnesio Count of Chinchón. The construction plans come from Santiago Bonavia , the completion was done by Vigilio Rabaglio to Gandria . The allegorical facade decoration represents faith, hope, love and strength and was created by Roberto Michel and Nicolás Caresana. She received the patronage of the Archangel Michael from the church of San Miguel de los Octoes, which was demolished under the Napoleonic occupation. The basilica is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural . Since 1959 it has been looked after by priests from Opus Dei .
