The Basilica di Santa Lucia a Mare (Basilica of St. Lucia by the Sea) is a Catholic parish and pilgrimage church and minor basilica in Borgo Santa Lucia , a port district of Naples . Its origins go back at least to the 9th century. The current building dates from the middle of the 19th century.

history

The veneration of the early Christian martyr Lucia of Syracuse in Naples goes back to the most ancient times. The legend ascribes the founding of the Luziakirche am Meer to a nephew of the Emperor Constantine . It has been documented since the 9th century. The addition of "a mare" to the name reminds us that the church originally stood directly on the bank. The old fishing quarter, the center of which it formed, was named after it. The fisherman's song Santa Lucia , which later became world-famous, was written in Borgo Santa Lucia . In 1588 the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. A women's convent (Suore di Santa Patrizia) belonged to the church .

In the 19th century, the Borgo Santa Lucia underwent profound changes that continued in the 20th century. Streets were straightened, the ground level raised and a piece of the foreland built on, u. a. with an extensive marine complex . As a result of these changes, the Luziakirche was rebuilt after 1845 over the old foundation walls and provided with a portal vestibule that stands parallel to the new course of Via Santa Lucia , but at an angle to the nave. In 1896 the church was extended. When bombardment from 4 August 1943 almost completely destroyed, it was rebuilt according to the pre-war state and re on April 14, 1951 consecrated .

Since 1983 Santa Lucia a Mare has officially been one of the archbishopric's pilgrimage churches. In 2012 she received from Pope Benedict XVI. the basilica title.
