The Evangelical Lutheran Basilica Altenkrempe is a three-aisled basilica in the style of brick Romanesque in Altenkrempe , a village near the East Holstein town of Neustadt in Holstein .

history

The date of the start of construction is not certain, as construction dates are not recorded. Due to the similarities to the Ratzeburg Cathedral and the use of brick as a building material, the first construction phase can be assumed to be at the beginning of the 13th century. The basilica is the architectural model for the Nikolaikirche in Mölln . Differences in the construction show that some time must have passed between the erection of the choir and nave .

construction

The basilica has three naves and no transept ; it closes with a choir, supplemented by a semicircular apse , which is narrower than the nave. The west facade is dominated by a tower with gabled sides, a tent roof as well as only small window openings and a multi-level round arched portal.

In the interior, the brick and plastered sections enter into a dialogue with subtle paintings. The three yokes with alternating columns are on a square floor plan, but still have pointed arches in the longitudinal view. In the stylistic classification, the basilica is to be placed in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic .

Much of the medieval furnishings are no longer there, as the furnishings were revised in the Baroque style .

In the classification of the building, the Altenkrempe basilica fits into a number of Holstein and Mecklenburg buildings from the same period, which were inspired in their formal language by the large buildings in Lübeck and Ratzeburg .
