The Basilica of the Assumption ( Polish: Bazylika Wniebowzięcia Najświętsza Maria Panna ) is a Roman Catholic monastery church in Stara Wieś in Gmina Brzozów in the Polish Subcarpathian Voivodeship . The Church of the Archdiocese of Przemyśl is under invocation of Assumption of Mary the Mother of God ordained. The late baroque church is protected as a monument and has the rank of a minor basilica .

history

The parish in Stara Wieś was founded in the middle of the 15th century and was part of the parish of Brzozów until the 19th century . The first wooden church was from the 14th century. In 1525 a picture of the Assumption and Coronation of Mary was installed on the main altar. From 1690 a new wooden church was built and equipped with three altars until 1698.

After the arrival of the Paulines in 1728, they built the Church of the Assumption together with the monastery between 1730 and 1760. It was consecrated in 1760 by the Bishop of Przemyśl Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski. During the ceremony, the image of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was transferred to the new monastery church. The Paulines had to give up Stara Wieś in the course of the abolition of the monastery by Emperor Joseph II . In 1821 Jesuits came to the monastery, who in turn had to leave the Austrian Empire by 1852 after the liberation movement in 1848 by decision of Emperor Ferdinand I and now have a novitiate in the monastery. The church towers were raised by one floor in 1843–1846, a pilgrim courtyard was built between 1864 and 1866, and in 1873 the pilgrims' chapel.

The painting of Our Lady of Starowiejska in the main altar of the basilica, regarded as miraculous , was canonically crowned on September 8, 1877 by Archbishop Lodovico Jacobini , the apostolic nuncio in Vienna , which encouraged pilgrimages. After a roof fire in 1886, new helmets were placed on the towers in 1893 . Pope Pius XI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica in 1927. The presumably almost 500 year old image of the Virgin Mary was destroyed by fire on December 6, 1968 by an unknown perpetrator as a communist crime and in 1972 it was solemnly replaced by a copy. On September 10, 1978, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the painting's coronation was held, and the ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła , who was elected Pope a month later.

architecture

A two-tower facade rises above the entrance to the church . The three-aisled basilica is divided into a nave, transept and choir , to which the sacristy adjoins on the left. The areas are separated by pilasters that end with floral ornaments. There were next barrel and cross vaults confiscated. The choir is surrounded by cornices below the windows. The altarpiece of the main altar with six lateral columns presents the image of the Virgin and fills the apse , it was made of stone and decorated with artificial marble and stucco. In the side aisles without church stalls there are four side altars, one of which is on the front. The polychromy was reduced to the status of 1760 in 2005. There is an organ above the entrance .
