career

Major league player, 1947-1960

Reinhold Ertel's football career began with the green-whites of SV Ellerbek . After the end of the Second World War, he joined the Holstein Kiel “Storks” at the start of the Oberliga Nord in 1947. With Holstein, Ertel, who can be used in defense, midfield and attack under coach Hans Tauchert in the first year of the Oberliga Nord, 1947/48, took 10th place alongside ten-time goalscorer Franz Linken and was in 16 league games (1 goal) for Use come. In the second league year, 1948/49, Kiel was excluded from playing after eight days of play and could only play friendly matches. The third league round in 1949/50 ended Ertel with the catch-up game on May 21, 1950 with a 2-2 at VfB Oldenburg, when he was the left wing runner in the World Cup system that was practiced at the time . This season he scored four goals in 22 league appearances and finished 11th with KSV. After 46 league appearances with five goals, he accepted the offer of Hamburger SV and moved to the Rothosen at Rothenbaum for the 1950/51 season.

Under coach Georg Knöpfle , the all-rounder struggled in the next two rounds in the battle for the regular place. He played his first league game with the diamond carriers on September 10, 1950 in a 1-1 draw at VfB Oldenburg. He played on half right and formed the HSV attack together with Manfred Krüger , Rolf Rohrberg , Herbert Wojtkowiak and Erich Ebeling . At the end of the round, he had played eleven league games when he won the championship in Hamburg. In the second HSV year, 1951/52, he only made five league games (1 goal), but was again champion of the Oberliga Nord. He was not used in the two finals. Ertel played his last round game for HSV on April 6, 1952 in a 4: 4 home draw against Hannover 96. He formed the defenders pair with Herbert Klette in front of goalkeeper Karl Grote . For the 1952/53 season he changed clubs, but stayed with FC St. Pauli in Hamburg with his signature.

The round began at Millerntor under coach Hans Appel , who was replaced by Heinz Hempel in October . Ertel initially played in the runner row at the side of Walter Dzur and Otmar Sommerfeld , but was also active in attack, for example on February 25, 1953 in a 2-1 home win against Holstein Kiel, where he scored both goals as a center forward. With 16 goals, Ertel was the top scorer in St. Pauli, followed by Alfred Beck with eleven goals. At the end of the round he finished 9th with St. Pauli and moved to VfB Lübeck after one season.

Under coach Friedo Dörfel , Ertel did not manage to score a single goal at VfB Lübeck in 1953/54. He played in 22 league games for the green-whites alongside goalkeeper Jonny Felgenhauer , Hans Nebelung , Heinz Patzig and Rudolf Wlassny and was relegated to the amateur camp as 15th with VfB. Ertel returned to Hamburg and joined Eimsbüttel TV for two years. With the ETV he started in 1954/55 under coach Walter Risse with 0: 8 points and acted as a middle runner on October 3, 1954 in the first double point win against the Harburg TB. He was also the head of defense in the 2-1 victory against the reigning German champions Hannover 96 on October 10th, alongside the brothers Karl-Heinz and Kurt Manja . ETV experienced another high point with Ertel on November 7, 1954 at the last Sunday morning game at Rothenbaum as a guest of Hamburger SV. 17,000 spectators followed the game and created a background noise that exposed the service in the nearby St. John's Church to tremendous turbulence. At the end of 90 turbulent minutes, HSV had won 5: 3 - and lost a tradition they had cherished. At the end of the round, ETV was in 8th place and Ertel had scored two goals in 28 league appearances. In his second season with Eimsbüttel, Ertel is relegated with coach Heinz Werner . He scored five goals in 28 league appearances and was the last Eimsbüttel player to play in an international selection match on June 13th. Reinhold Ertel wears the colors of northern Germany, which loses 2: 4 in Groningen against the best footballers in North Holland. Teammates included Werner Lang , Horst Dehn , Erich Haase and Dragomir Ilic . His former ETV teammate Paul Ahrens made the following statement in an interview with Ertel: “Reinhold Ertel was an absolute great guy off the pitch, but sometimes a real disgust in the 90 minutes. If he was dissatisfied with your performance, he would whisper to you: You want a chair, then you can sit too "But what a footballer: He could do everything, left and right and headers and a body like Adonis."

After the descent from ETV, the "Wandervogel" moved to southern Germany in the Oberliga Süd. For the 1956/57 season Ertel signed a contract with Viktoria Aschaffenburg. Under coach Hans Tauchert he only managed 12 missions (1 goal) alongside goalkeeper Otmar Groh , Heinz Budion and Rudolf Hoffmann . Aschaffenburg finished 8th and Ertel returned for the 1957/58 season back to the Oberliga Nord, he became a player at Phoenix Lübeck. With the blue-white-reds from the sports field on Travemünder Allee, Ertel reached the league twice with 14th place in 1958 and 1959. In the first year he played 28 league games under coach Erwin Reinhardt in which he scored six goals. As almost always in his career, he was alternately in defense and attack. In his second Phoenix year he experienced the work of the trainer Otto Westphal and had been active in 29 league games and had again scored six goals. In the third year, 1959/60, the eagle-bearers could not keep the league as 15th and were relegated to the amateur camp. Ertel had played 20 games in the Oberliga Nord alongside Eitel Galle and Otto Hartz and scored four goals.

In the summer of 1960, the career of the 35-year-old Ertel, started in 1947, ended as a player in the league, after a total of 258 league appearances with 46 goals.

Trainer

He started his coaching career at Phönix in 1964 and rose to the second -rate regional soccer league in 1967 with the Eagle Bearers . Two rounds he reached the excellent 6th place with players like goalkeeper Jürgen Stars , Siegfried Beyer , Wolfgang Bordel and Peter Nogly , before he was dismissed at the end of 1969. After a short stay at Concordia Hamburg, Ertel was in charge of training at Barmbek-Uhlenhorst from 1972 to 1975; the last two years in the old, second-rate Regionalliga Nord and in the debut year in the 2nd Bundesliga 1974/75. In the second year of the 2. Bundesliga, 1975/76, he was the coach of VfL Osnabrück and had license holder Edu Sausmikat as his assistant. Due to his lack of a professional trainer license, the club and Ertel had to end their cooperation after one round. The football expert, known for his rough but cordial tone, then hired at VfB Lübeck, but died in January 1981.
