career

Beginning

Manfred Krüger moved to Nuremberg with his parents when he was seven . He joined the youth department of 1. FC Nürnberg and played in the B youth team with players like Max Morlock , Adolf Knoll and Helmut Herbolsheimer . Circumstances of the Second World War took him away from Nuremberg and after its end to Saxony-Anhalt , where he was active at SG Freiimfelde Halle . In the games for the Eastern Zone Championship in 1948 , he scored three goals in the semifinals on June 27, 1948 in a 5-2 win in Magdeburg against SG Meerane . Since the "wing tongs" with right winger Krüger and left winger Karl Gola could not prevail in the final game on July 4th in Leipzig against SG Planitz , the game was lost with 1-0 goals. Previously, on May 16, 1948, he was in the attack against the selection of Saxony-Anhalt under coach Kurt Vorkauf at the game in Halle against the selection of Saxony led by player- coach Helmut Schön alongside teammates such as Werner Welzel and Erich Ebeling . In the current round of 1948/49, the attacker joined Hamburger SV in the Northern Football League.

Hamburg and Saarbrücken, 1949 to 1955

On January 9, 1949, Krüger played the first league game for the "Rautträger" of HSV. In the 3-2 away win against Bremerhaven 93 , he scored two goals. With Heinz Werner , Helmut Schmeißer , Heinz Trenkel and Erich Ebeling there were four other players from the former eastern zone in the team from the Hanseatic city. Under coach Hans Tauchert, the season ended tied with FC St. Pauli with 32:12 points and a playoff had to decide the championship. On May 22, 1949, Krüger (on right wing; one goal) and colleagues prevailed in front of 42,000 spectators with a 5-3 victory. In the final round of the German soccer championship , however, HSV went down on June 12 with 0: 5 goals against eventual surprise champions VfR Mannheim . Previously, Krüger had been with HSV in May 1950 on an interesting but also grueling USA tour. In the next four rounds - 1950 to 1953 - he won the championship in the Oberliga Nord with Hamburg under coach Georg Knöpfle . The proven dribbler and flank giver on the wing was a constant member of the regular line-up of the team around Jupp Posipal and Herbert Wojtkowiak .

On September 22, 1951 he was appointed to the German B national team by national coach Sepp Herberger at the international match in Augsburg against Austria. In the 1-1 draw, the DFB-Elf attacked with Krüger, Georg Stollenwerk , Willi Schröder , Otto Baitinger and Rolf Blessing . In the selection of Northern Germany, he came to the right winger on October 14, 1951 in Kiel in a 2-2 draw against West Germany and scored a goal. From 1949 to 1953 he played a total of 19 games for the northern series champion in the final round of the German soccer championship; But it wasn't enough to win the title. After the bad sporting season 1953/54 with an 11th place, he joined 1. FC Saarbrücken in the Oberliga Südwest for the 1954/55 round.

To reach third place in the table of 1. FC Saarbrücken, he contributed four goals in 15 league games under his old HSV coach Hans Tauchert at the side of fellow players such as Herbert Martin and Herbert Binkert . Other players on the offensive were Werner Otto , Karl Schirra and Gerhard Siedl . With his use on April 10, 1955 in a 0-1 away defeat against FK Pirmasens ended his higher-class playing career.
