history

The first traces of the parish go back to the 10th century under the Duke of Géiz with the settlement of Villa Sancta Andrea. The first recorded church near today's church not far from the Danube was built by the Jesuits between 1674 and 1677 . After the Turkish occupation, the city recovered at the beginning of the 18th century, which was then the fourth largest city in Hungary. The city council decided to build a larger church. Work began in 1719 and on June 28, 1723 the foundation stone of the Church of St. Andrew was laid. 800,000 bricks from the demolished fortress were also used. Due to the fast and poor construction, several repairs were required. The church was completed together with the Jesuit monastery in 1763. The earthquake on June 28, 1763 caused the new church to collapse. It was rebuilt until 1771 under the direction of the Jesuits. As early as 1773, however, the Jesuits had to leave the dissolved monastery and the city. The Benedictines later moved into the monastery and looked after the church. The town fire of September 17, 1848 also hit the church, which could only be re-consecrated on October 28, 1860. Since then, the church has had a late Baroque style with classical elements. The concave double tower facade is decorated with some figures of saints, both towers wear clocks and helmets . The interior of the single-nave church was restored in 1975 and the roof was renewed from 1990 to 1992. In 2017, Pope Francis raised the church to the rank of minor basilica .

Furnishing

Buckow organ

Important elements of the church furnishings are the main altar by Carl Petrus, which was created between 1855 and 1860, and the monumental altarpiece of the Apostle Andrew by Michelangelo Grigoletti hanging above it . In addition to some side altars, the Holy Sepulcher Chapel and the side chapel of the Black Madonna are significant, the latter was made of ebony in the Rococo style between 1780 and 1810. The cross is a work by Philipp Jakob Straub . The stations of the cross were made by Gyula Berecza in 1935. Furthermore, the basilica is decorated with many frescoes from the 1870s, stained glass and sacred oil paintings.

The organ is one of the largest organs in Slovakia and was his last installed by Carl Friedrich Ferdinand Buckow in 1864 , he died here.
