The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy ( Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Misericordias ) is a Roman Catholic church in Apizaco in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala . The minor basilica of the diocese of Tlaxcala is dedicated to the Blessed Mother Mary under the invocation of the Mother of Mercy .

history

The town of Apizaco emerged in the 1860s from a settlement for railway construction. The current church was designed in the 1930s by Pastor Adolfo Sebastián and initially built under the direction of Miguel Pardo. The construction was completed in December 1961 by Rodolfo Zenteno under Father Marcial Aguilar González. Pope Paul VI elevated the church to the rank of basilica minor on December 5, 1963, and the solemn proclamation took place on the following patronage feast on May 12, 1964.

The three-aisled basilica was designed in a historicist style, despite being described as a neo-Gothic church, the arches are rounded. The church has a 10.5 meter wide central nave with a 19 meter high barrel vault divided into five bays ; the domed vaults of the side aisles, which are only half as wide, are only 10.5 meters high. The crossing dome rises 35.5 meters above the drum up to the lantern , the towers of the double tower facade reach 50 meters. The pilasters and the inner arches are clad in stone, from the plastered ceiling of the barrel vault, stitch caps open to the stained glass windows . The sanctuary, closed off with a round apse , is equipped with an altar made of Carrara marble . A 12.5 meter high ciborium with columns made of Tepeaca marble rises above it.
