The diocese Tlaxcala was on May 23, 1959 by Pope John XXIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Christianorum gregem from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Mexico City and the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles as a suffragan .
