The Church of Our Lady in Brestanica , a district of Krško , is one of the most important pilgrimage churches in Slovenia . It is subordinate to the diocese of Celje and was founded in 1928 by Pope Pius XI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica . The basilica is one of the largest churches in the country, is the largest church in the Sava Valley and is a major tourist destination.

The church was built between 1908 and 1914 as a three-aisled basilica with a transept and double tower facade in the neo-Romanesque style by Hans Pascher . The construction was financed by donations from all over the country. The foundation stone was laid on the 50th anniversary of the miracles of Lourdes , which is why the church itself is also known as the “Slovenian Lourdes”. The painting from 1911 is by Osvaldo Bierte . The most valuable and oldest piece of equipment in the church is the Pietà from the 15th century. The organ was installed in the church in 1929.
