The organ builder Josef Brandl

Josef Brandl (born August 15, 1865 in Eisendorf, † June 20, 1938 in Maribor ) was a master organ builder and owner of the company Josef Brandl's Orgelbau-Anstalt in Marburg an der Drau .

Life

Josef Brandl was born in Eisendorf, about three kilometers south of Grafing near Munich . From February 17, 1878 to January 7, 1882 he completed an apprenticeship as a craftsman with the well-known master organ builder Jakob Müller in Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria . After completing his apprenticeship, Brandl worked as a journeyman in this company for three more years. Then he went on a hike and worked for the important organ builder Mathias Burkard in Heidelberg and later in the also recognized organ building workshops in Vorarlberg , with the Mayer brothers in Feldkirch and Anton Behmann in Schwarzach .

After passing his master craftsman's examination, Josef Brandl worked temporarily with Ludwig Edenhofer in Regen in Lower Bavaria before settling in the Lower Styrian town of Marburg (now Maribor in Slovenia ) in September 1893, where he founded a modern organ building company.

Through solid repair and reconstruction work on older organs, Josef Brandl quickly convinced the episcopal ordinariate of his abilities, so that his company was extremely successful from the start. In the following years he mainly manufactured small and medium-sized organs for country churches in the eastern area of the Diocese of Lavant , in Lower Styria and in the western Zala and Warasdin counties of Hungary . Thanks to numerous technical improvements and tonal adjustments, Brandl's “Orgelbau Anstalt” enjoyed great trust among clients. Josef Brandl mainly built organs with a romantic disposition and pneumatic action , in particular he made considerable progress in refining the cone chest .

In his working life, Brandl and his employees demonstrably manufactured 149 organs. These are provided with an enamel plate on the gaming table , on which the company name and the serial number ( opus ) can be seen. His largest and most famous instruments are in Maribor ( basilica , 1900, 34 registers and cathedral , 30 registers) in Brestanica / Reichenburg ( basilica , 1928, 40 registers) and in Dubrovnik (Sv.Vlaha, 1937, opus 144, 30 registers) .
