Bridge over the Baspa near Chitkul |
The Baspa is a 75 km long left tributary of the Satluj in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northwest India .
The Baspa is fed by the Baspa glacier and other glaciers near the Indian border with Tibet. The river flows in a westerly direction through the Baspatal (also known as Sanglatal). This is located in the Himalayas in the southeast of the Kinnaur district . For the lower 40 km from Chitkul , a road runs along the course of the river. Only this section of the Baspa valley is populated. The main town of the valley is Sangla . Below the confluence of the Baspa in the Satluj this is dammed by the Karcham-Wangtoo dam , so that the Baspa is backed up over a length of about one kilometer.
Use of hydropower
At Kuppa near Sangla, about 10 km above the estuary, the river is dammed up by a weir at an altitude of about 2600 m to generate electricity and a large part of the water via a 7.95 km long tunnel and an 845 m long pressure pipe to the one at the Hydroelectric power station located at the river mouth. The weir has only a limited storage capacity. The hydraulic potential is 702 m. The hydropower plant, which went into operation in May 2003, has three Pelton turbines of 100 MW each .
