Bastian Muhr (* 1981 in Braunschweig ) is a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Growing up in Berlin , Bastian Muhr studied painting and graphics from 2004 to 2010 at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art (HGB). He then completed his master class with Annette Schröter , which he completed in 2013 with the title of master class. From the 2013/2014 winter semester to the 2015 summer semester, Bastian Muhr worked as an artistic assistant in Ingo Meller's class at the HGB Leipzig. He lives and works in Leipzig .

Muhr's work encompasses the genres of painting and drawing, which he performs alongside one another on an equal footing. Since 2011 he has been focusing more and more on drawing, which he continues to increase in its complexity. His abstract, small-scale works are characterized by an interplay of system and chance , which the recipient only reveals after a long period of viewing. Constructs of geometric shapes fill the surfaces until a complete grid is created. Depending on the distance to the picture, the perception alternates between homogeneous flatness, expansive three-dimensionality and delicate structure. The controlled strokes make the artist's work process clear and lead to a reflection of the methodologies and creative processes as well as an examination of the spatial and temporal conditions.

The papers have no predefined reading direction. Ideally, they are presented lying in showcases so that the viewer can bypass them and choose their own point of view. The leaves become objects in the room, the motif alternates between pattern and composition.

Since 2015 painting has also played an increasingly important role for the artist. From a series of preliminary drawings, he has developed his own figure language, which now reappears in painting. A certain motive can be guessed here, but never really determined. “As colored pictograms of his perception of the world, his painting moves in the field of tension between symbol and abstraction.” The work process becomes comprehensible. Corrections and traces of work are deliberately not concealed and evoke reflection on material and color.

A separate series of drawings was created from the small-format preliminary drawings for the painting. Here the artist works on the sheets until they are completely filled with pencil lines and the original lines only appear in the negative.
