The Kunstverein Leipzig was founded in 1993 in Leipzig on Nonnenstrasse. The exhibition operation of the Kunstverein launched in April 1994 with HOMA-HOUSE by Carsten Nicolai . Since October 2007 the Kunstverein Leipzig has been located in Kolonnadenstrasse and was wound up in 2013 due to bankruptcy. In May 2014 the Association for Contemporary Art Leipzig was founded in the premises of Kolonnadenstrasse .

The core work was the promotion and exhibition of young, regional artists. A large number of well-known artists have exhibited in the Kunstverein Leipzig or designed works of art directly for the exhibition space. These include Siegfried Anzinger , Liam Gillick , Paule Hammer , Rosa Loy , Verena Landau , Neo Rauch , Wolfgang Tillmans , Michael Triegel , Tobias Trutwin and Cornelius Völker .

A close cooperation with the University of Graphic and Book Art Leipzig was part of the self- image of the art association. In the past, numerous diploma and master class exhibitions have taken place. The art association was recognized as a non-profit organization by the Leipzig tax office and a member of the German art association working group . It was run on a voluntary basis and was financed by donations, project funding and income from annual donations.

The artistic directors were Jürgen Meier, Verena Tintelnot, Josef Filipp and Thorsten Hinz. The artist Reinhard Krehl was chairman .

With the magazine hub zur Kunst , the art association makes a contribution to art education. The magazine was published twice a year and was devoted to regional art criticism with discursive argumentation and analysis as well as promoting young talent through the presentation of a diploma thesis from the College of Graphics and Book Art. No. 1, 2006 to No. 7, 2009 were published. With the project Zwischengrün , the Kunstverein Leipzig, in cooperation with other Leipzig institutions, addressed the discussion of city, garden, landscape and art in public space . In addition, the art association worked on setting up a media library with a library , reading area and video lounge.
