Basuki Rahmat (born November 14, 1921 in Tuban, Jawa Timur ; † January 8, 1969 ) was an Indonesian major general (Mayor Jenderal) of the Army (Angkatan Darat) of the armed forces of Indonesia TNI (Tentara Nasional Indonesia) and national hero (Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia) who was Minister of the Interior between 1966 and his death in 1969.

Life

After Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, Rahmat joined the People's Security Army BKR / TKR (Badan Keamanan Rakyat / Tentara Keamanan Rakyat) and then joined the Indonesian armed forces ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republic of Indonesia) . After initially commander of a battalion in Ngawi between 1945 and 1946 and commander of the 16th battalion in Ronggolawe from 1946 to 1950, he served as commander of a regiment in Bojonegoro between 1950 and 1953 . Subsequently, from 1953 to 1956 he was chief of staff of the regional military command KODAM V (Komando Daerah Militer) in Jawa Timur and 1956 acting commander of this regional military command. He then became a military attaché at the embassy in Australia in September 1956 and, after his return in 1959, was fourth assistant chief of the general staff for logistics and thus a close associate of the then chief of the general staff, Abdul Haris Nasution .

Thereupon Rahmat acted between 1962 and 1965 in the rank of major general (Mayor Jenderal) as commander of the now regional military command KODAM VIII in Jawa Timur. During this time, the attempted coup by the September 30th Movement (Gerakan September Tiga Puluh) , which triggered the massacres in Indonesia from 1965 to 1966 . Units of the KODAM VIII commanded by him were actively involved in the suppression of the coup attempt, the massacres and the measures against the Communist Party of Indonesia PKI (Partai Komunis Indonesia) . He then became Vice Minister for Special Tasks and Commander of the Army and, in this function, played a key role in the implementation of the Supersemar Decree (Surat Perintah Sebelas Maret) of March 11, 1966 by President Sukarno , which authorized Lieutenant General Suharto to approve all measures to bring order after the failed coup attempt on September 30, 1965.

On March 27, 1966 he took over the post of Minister of the Interior (Menteri Dalam Negeri) from Soemarno . At the same time, he acted for a short time in 1966 as Minister for Veterans and Mobilization (Menteri Veteran dan Demobilisasi) . Rahmat, who is one of the national heroes of Indonesia (Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia) , held the post of interior minister until his death on January 8, 1969, when he was replaced by Major General Amir Machmud .
