Amir Machmud (born February 21, 1923 in Cimahi , Jawa Barat ; † April 21, 1995 ibid) was an Indonesian general (Jenderal) of the Army (Angkatan Darat) of the Indonesian armed forces TNI (Tentara Nasional Indonesia) and a politician of the functional group party Golkar (Partai Karya Golongan) , among others, from 1969 to 1982 and then interior minister from 1982 to 1987 Speaker of the house DPR (Dewan Rakyat Perwakilan) and the people's Consultative Assembly MPR (Majelis Rakyat Permusyawaratan) was.

Life

After Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, Amir Machmud joined the People's Security Army TKR (Tentara Keamanan Rakyat) and then the Indonesian armed forces ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republic of Indonesia) and then found numerous uses as an officer and staff officer in the army (Angkatan Darat) . He was commander of the battalion in Tasikmalaya as well as chief of the staff of the regiment in Bogor and then chief of the staff of the regional military command KODAM VI (Komando Daerah Militer) in Jawa Barat . Between 1958 and 1960 he was an officer in the General Staff of the Army and then in 1960 he graduated from the Staff and Command School of the Army SEKOAD (Sekolah Staf dan Komando Angkatan Darat) , where he met General Suharto . After completing his training, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Strategic Army Reserve Corps CADUAD ( Cadangan Umum Angkatan Darat ) and in 1962, during the occupation of Western New Guinea, he was the operations staff officer of the units deployed there.

On November 28, 1962 Brigadier General (Brigadir Jenderal) Amir Machmud replaced Colonel M. Jusi as commander of the Regional Military Command KODAM X in Kalimantan Selatan and remained in this position until he was replaced by Colonel Sutopo Juwono on November 15, 1965. During this time, the attempted coup by the September 30th Movement (Gerakan September Tiga Puluh) , which triggered the massacres in Indonesia from 1965 to 1966 . He himself then succeeded Brigadier General Umar Wirahadikusumah, commander of the KODAM V Regional Military Command in Jakarta and remained in this position until he was replaced by Brigadier General Makmun Murod in 1969. In this role, he was instrumental in the implementation of the Supersemar Decree (Surat Perintah Sebelas Maret ) of March 11, 1966 by President Sukarno , who gave Lieutenant General Suharto the authorization to take all measures to maintain order after the failed attempted coup on September 30, 1965 .

After the death of Major General Basuki Rahmat on January 8, 1969, Amir Machmud succeeded him as Interior Minister (Menteri Dalam Negeri) in the first presidential government of Suharto (Pembangunan I) and also held this ministerial office in the second (Pembangunan II) and third presidential government of Suharato ( Pembangunan III) until October 1, 1982 and was then replaced by Soepardjo Roestam . As Home Secretary, he was a close advisor to President Suharto and was nicknamed the "Bulldozer" because of his tough style. In this function, on November 29, 1971, he was instrumental in founding the organization of the civil service KOPRI (Korps Pegawai Republik Indonesia) .

On October 1, 1982, Amir Machmud succeeded Daryatmo as chairman of the House of Representatives DPR (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat) and the MPR (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) People's Consultative Assembly and held these offices until he was replaced by Kharis Suhud in October 1987.
