Umar Wirahadikusumah (born October 10, 1924 in Situraja , Sumedang , Jawa Barat , Dutch East Indies ; † March 21, 2003 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian general and politician of the Golkar Functional Group Party (Partai Golongan Karya) , who, among other things, between 1960 and 1965 Commander of the Regional Military Command V Jayakarta and then from 1965 to 1967 Commander of the Strategic Army Reserve Command ( Kostrad ) and as such played a major role in the suppression of the September 30 G30S movement (Gerakan September Tiga Puluh) and the subsequent massacre of members and sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). Later he was Chief of Staff of the Army of the Armed Forces of Indonesia from 1969 to 1973 and President of the Supreme Audit Office from 1973 to 1983. Life

Military career and Chief of Staff of the Army

Umar Wirahadikusumah, the fifth child of Raden Rangga Wirahadikusumah and his wife Raden Ratnaningrum, attended the Europeesche Lagere School between 1935 and 1942 and then from 1942 to 1945 the extended primary school MULO (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs) . In 1943, during the occupation of the Dutch East Indies by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II, he joined the Army of the Defenders of the Fatherland Peta (Pembela Tanah Air) founded by the Japanese occupying forces and completed his military training in Bogor in 1944 . He participated in the War of Independence against the civil administration in the Dutch East Indies NICU (Nederlandsch-Indian Civiele Administratie) and it joined after the Indonesian Declaration of Independence of 17 August 1945 in which was founded on October 5, 1945 Indonesian National Armed Forces ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia) a, today's Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI).

On May 27, 1967, Major General Kemal Idris became the new commander of Kostrad, while Wirahadikusumah first became Deputy Commander of the Army and, in 1968, Deputy Chief of Army Staff. Most recently he replaced General Maraden Panggabean as general on November 25, 1969 and became Chief of Staff of the Army KASAD (Kepala Staf TNI Angkatan Darat) of the armed forces of Indonesia . He held this post until April 27, 1973, after which General Surono Reksodimedjo took his place.

Vice President of Indonesia

After retiring from active military service, Umar Wirahadikusumah succeeded D. Suprayogi as President of the Supreme Audit Office BPL (Badan Pemeriksa Keuangan) and held this post for ten years until his replacement by M. Jusuf in 1983.

On March 12, 1983, Wirahadikusumah finally succeeded Adam Malik, Vice President of Indonesia . He held this office as deputy to President Suharto until March 11, 1988 and was subsequently replaced by Sudharmono .

His marriage to Karlina Wirahadikusumah had two daughters. His nephew Lieutenant General Agus Wirahadikusumah was also the commander of the Strategic Army Reserve Command (Kostrad) in 2000 .
