Soepardjo Roestam I (born August 12, 1926 in Sokaraja , Kabupaten Banyumas , Jawa Tengah ; † April 11, 1993 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian politician and diplomat who, among other things, was ambassador to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia between 1971 and 1972 , from 1972 Ambassador to Malaysia until 1974 , governor of the Jawa Tengah province between 1974 and 1982 , interior minister from 1983 to 1988 and most recently coordinating minister for public welfare between 1988 and 1993.

Life

Roestam completed his education at the Hollandsch-Inlandsche School (HIS), Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (MULO) and the middle school in Purwokerto . He then took part in the Indonesian War of Independence from 1944 and was subsequently adjutant to General Sudirman, the commander in chief of the armed forces of Indonesia, between 1946 and 1950 . In 1952 he became secretary of the military attaché at the embassies in the Netherlands and was subsequently an officer in the general staff of the army between 1953 and 1955. After being in command of the infantry school in Curup in South Sumatra between 1956 and 1957 and again an officer in the Army General Staff in 1958, he served as a military attaché at the embassy in Malaysia between 1959 and 1962 . After his return he was deputy assistant and head of Staff Division VI of the Army Commander in Chief from 1963 to 1966

In 1967 Roestam moved to the Foreign Ministry and became Head of the Department for Asia and the Pacific and in 1971 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , before he succeeded Thalib Depati Santio Bowo as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Malaysia in 1972 and this office up to his Replacement by Police General Mohamad Hasan in 1974. He then succeeded Munadi as governor of the Jawa Tengah Province in 1974 and remained in this office until 1982, when Major General Muhammad Ismail took over this post.

On March 19, 1983, Roestam succeeded General Amir Machmud as Minister of the Interior (Menteri Dalam Negeri) in the fourth government (Kebinet Pembangunan IV) of President Suharto and held this office until he was replaced by General Rudini on March 23, 1988. He himself succeeded Alamsjah Ratoe Perwiranegara from March 23, 1988 until his replacement by Lieutenant General Azwar Anas on March 19, 1993 in the fifth government (Kebinet Pembangunan V) from President Suharto as Coordinating Minister for Public Welfare (Menteri Coordinator Bidang Kesejahteraan Rakyat) .
