The Batchawana River is an approximately 115 km long tributary of Lake Superior in the Canadian province of Ontario .
It has its origin in an unnamed lake on the Canadian Shield 95 km north-northeast of Sault Ste. Marie . From there it initially flows 10 km in a north-westerly direction and then 20 km in a westerly direction. Later, the Batchawana River flows west-southwest before turning southwest for the final 30 km. The Algoma Central Railway crosses the river 47 km above the estuary . On the lower reaches of the river, between river kilometers 37 and 10, is the 2,684-acre Batchawana River Provincial Park . The river flows through a 13 km long gorge with several rapids on this section. Over the last 10 km, the river forms several narrow loops before finally flowing 45 km north of the town of Sault Ste. Marie flows into the western part of Batchawana Bay , a small bay on the eastern north shore of Lake Superior. The Ontario Highway 17 crosses the flow immediately before its mouth.
The course of the Batchawana River runs through a wooded region. Yellow birch , white pine and Canadian hemlock line the river. The latter have their northern limit of distribution in this area. There is also an independent brook trout population in the river .
The catchment area of the Batchawana River covers approximately 1275 km². The mean discharge 14 km above the mouth is 22 m³ / s. In April and May, when the snow melts, the river usually carries the largest amounts of water.
