Batrachedra amydraula is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of batrachedridae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 11 to 12 millimeters. The head is ocher-colored gray and has white stripes on the sides, which extend from the antenna base to the tuft of the neck and become wider there. The antennae are ringed ocher gray and indistinct brown. The first four segments are ocher gray. The thorax is ocher gray and laterally yellowish white. The tegulae are yellowish white and mottled ocher gray. The front wings are pale yellow to yellowish white. The dorsal half up to the Kostalfold and the half above the Kostalfold are densely covered with brown scales , so that a pale yellow line arises in the middle with only a few brown scales interspersed. Shortly before the middle of the forewing, there is an indistinct brown line on the Kostal fold. In the pale yellow line there are brown spots at 3/5 and 4/5. The fringed scales are ocher gray. The hind wings shine pale gray.

Similar species

B. amydraula is smaller and can also be distinguished from Batrachedra parvulipunctella by the pale yellow longitudinal line on the forewings.

distribution

Batrachedra amydraula is native to North Africa , the Near and Middle East . In the east the distribution area extends to India .

biology

The caterpillars develop on the real date palm ( Phoenix dactylifera ). They bite a hole at the end of the stem, through which they penetrate the young fruit and damage the pulp and the soft seeds. The injuries that are inflicted on the trees result in considerable yield losses. The moths fly in three generations from March to August. B. amydraula is one of the most important pests of the date palm and is known in English as the "lesser date moth".
