Battle Ground is a city in Clark County in the US state of Washington . The population was 9,296 at the 2000 census.

Origin of the name "Battle Ground"

Ironically, there was no battle at the place. 1855 many of the soldiers were nearby Fort Vancouver absent, an uprising of Yakima - Indians to fight. Nervous settlers organized a group of volunteers to guard the understaffed fort. They feared that the really friendly tribe of Klickitat the Lewis River would join the uprising, and beorderten them into the Vancouver Barracks near the fort.

When some of the Klickitat escaped, Captain William Strong led some of the volunteers to bring them back. They overwhelmed the Klickitats near the present location, but instead of engaging them in a fight, Captain Strong persuaded them to return peacefully to the fort. During these events the leader of the Klickitat, Chief Umtuch, was killed. The circumstances of his death are unclear: some say he was killed by a soldier, others believe that an accidental shot by his own men was the cause. The Klickitat promised to return to the fort after burying their chief, a ceremony that would last for several days, so Strong returned without them.

The settlers had expected a fight, and when Strong returned empty-handed, they accused him of cowardice. So he went back to meet the Klickitat, again assured that they would return to the fort peacefully, and again he came back empty-handed.

The Indians returned as promised, but Strong continued to be criticized. The women of the fort "rewarded" him with a multi-colored cloak in a pseudo-celebration for his bravery, and the area where the Klickitat was placed was derisively referred to as "Strong's Battle Ground," and later simply "Battle Ground".
