Builder of socialism - Walter Ulbricht is a German propaganda film from 1953. The lavishly filmed film was made for Walter Ulbricht's 60th birthday in the style of a documentary .

On the occasion of this date, DEFA was also supposed to honor the General Secretary of the SED with an effort approaching personality cult . In the preparatory committee were u. a. Fred Oelßner and Lotte Kühn represented. Stephan Hermlin wrote the text of the film . The very concise and euphemistic biography of Ulbricht - until 1945 - speaks in the film Johannes R. Becher , the music contributed Ottmar Gerster and Ernst Hermann Meyer . The film portrays Ulbricht as an omnipresent father of the country, statesman, omniscient advisor and loyal advocate of the teachings of Stalin , who always remains human.

At the beginning of June 1953, immediately after taking office as High Commissioner of the Soviet Union in Germany , Vladimir Semyonov advised Ulbricht to make his upcoming 60th birthday on June 30th modest. This happened against the background of Stalin's death in March 1953 and the known difficulties in the GDR. The name Walter Ulbricht immediately disappeared from newspaper articles by the uprising of June 17, and a million books produced for the festival were crushed. The film came to the GDR State Film Archive as “documentary material” . There he was discovered in 1989 in the course of the " Wende ".

Its world premiere took place in 1997 in connection with an exhibition on agitation and propaganda in the early GDR years of the German Historical Museum in Berlin; the archive material is now available on DVD.

Individual evidence

  1. This corresponds to the information in the DEFA film database. In the opening credits it says: “The text wrote the national prize winner Stephan Hermlin”. The cover that accompanies the DVD names a "birthday preparation commission" without specifying the script.
